This will be an ongoing post about how we are integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to “Feed the World. Save our Planet.” Feel free to leave a comment below and subscribe for updates.
Why AI?
Pretty much every major technology company is betting on Artificial Intelligence (often referred to “machine” or “deep learning” and “NLP”—Natural Language Programming) these days. And rightfully so. We live in the era of “big data.” Technology has made it more possible than ever to collect data for everything.
Yet while capturing data is getting easier, making use of that data is completely another story. This is where artificial intelligence comes in. AI allows us to process that data, for practical insights, in a shorter time frame than any manual crunching could.
We use AI every day without even being aware of it. Siri and Cortana are obvious examples. Google uses AI to rank web pages and deliver the best search experience. Recently, Google’s AI, DeepMind, beat the top player of the game Go (Chess, Scrabble, Othello, even Jeopardy! had already been conquered).
AI and Agriculture
Artificial Intelligence is being applied to agriculture everywhere. It is being used to help farmers manage their farms and grow crops more efficiently. AI is being used to analyze big data from the environment for breakthrough innovation. Food kit and delivery companies use AI to help manage supplies, costs and distribution. And this is only the beginning. Right now billions of dollars are being invested into Ag-based AI startups.
Freshly Grown and AI
One area we are focusing on is using AI to help regenerative farmers, ranchers and product producers with direct marketing. There is so much marketing data out there that hard-working regenerative producers simply do not have the time or resources to access effectively. We believe marketing and distribution plays just as an important role in holistic management as other farming practices. But the fact is, most small scale producers, committed to regenerative agriculture, simply do not have the infrastructure for direct marketing. This is an admitted weakness that frustrated the individual trying to support local food.
The more producers are able to sell direct, to customers wanting to eat farm to table, the more they can invest in regenerative agriculture. And to us, being regenerative is more important than sustainability. Regenerative agriculture is the answer to the world’s impending food-based health, economical and environmental crisis.
How You Can Help
The more you interact with the Freshly Grown platform, the more you help us train our AI. AI is only useful if it solves real-world problems and requests. We are constantly gathering data to develop our tools and help farmers. Your feedback is critical. We can’t promise our AI will be perfect. We can only share our commitment to innovation.
So if you haven’t already, give some of our tools a try. Our latest Facebook Chatbot which we’re using to gather data on the Natural Language Programming necessary to teach an AI how to help with direct-marketing. Eventually, we’ll move the data to a more powerful cognitive learning platform to really gain new insights on how to feed the world and heal our planet. Try it here or simply click the Virtual Assistant any time. We’d love to hear what you think.
